In the late 1850's,
The city government decided to fill in the
swamp to the west of the public garden. This brand new district, which would take its name from the swamp
which preceded it, attracted the wealthiest members of
society who had some of the most noteworthy architects of the time design and
build their new homes.
Today,
there are still many single family homes in this area. But the majority of the
buildings have been converted into lovely condominium homes.
The most elegant shopping
in Boston is located on Newbury Street, parallel
to and one block to the South of Commonwealth Avenue.
